"Woven Visions"
The Flat Iron Gallery of Peekskill, NY. will have its first one-woman show of the amazing handwoven tapestries of artist, Erika Baker, entitled, "Woven Visions" featuring large tapestries of figures, floral, still-life, and landscapes, all expertly crafted. Ms. Baker has been exhibiting and winning awards from prestigious art centers such as the Mamaroneck Artist Guild for her unique woven designs since 1981. Ms. Baker had taught workshops at several national and international conferences. As a native of Hungary, she learned her craft at an early age and even creates elaborate coats and sweaters with handspun, handyed yarn in addition to wall hangings. Some of her romantic tapestry landscapes are of Budapest reflecting its unique architecture and fishing villages, but others are of Colorado and the American Southwest. Her colors and textures are rich and magical, a delight for the viewer.
The artist writes: "As an artist, my personal goal is simply to play with colors and yarns to create something original and beautiful. I subscribe to the motto, "If you are not a piece of art, wear one", which leads me to create wearable art. My intense interest in texture and form drives me to continuously experiment with new techniques. Colors are often the main focus of my composition, which had led me to experiment with natural dyes to get more variety of soft, subtle colors. O also like to "paint" with yarn, using techniques like knitting, weaving, or crocheting to get exciting color harmonies and blends of textures. I admire Peruvian textile art, the renaissance in contemporary tapestries and of course, all forms of art in fiber."
This unique exhibit will be on view on the 2nd floor space of the Flat Iron Gallery from November 5th to December 26th, 2004. An artist's reception will be held Saturday November 6th, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. For more information about the Flat Iron Gallery, call Wendie Garber at (914) 734-1894.
